GANT Opening in Boston
“GANT will open its first New England store on Boston’s premier Newbury Street. Chosen for its unique mixture of college students, tourists, young professionals and old East Coast heritage, the city of Boston is a perfect fit. Located at 324 Newbury, the 2,000 square-foot GANT store will reside inside a street-level brick building and will retain its original historic elements with selected updates including white wainscoated walls, subway tiles and both vintage and artisan fixtures and furniture.”

GANT was founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1949—just steps from the Yale University campus—and was instrumental in shaping the casual mode of dressing that emerged during the post-WWII rise of American sportswear. GANT invented and popularized shirt features such as the button-down collar, the box pleat, the back collar button and the locker loop. Those shirts became associated with the Ivy League look and the Yale Co-op was one of its most famed distributors.
The Yale Co-op was the social hub of the campus—a store where everything a student might need—from toiletries to books to clothing—might be found. In the 1960s, GANT made a shirt collection exclusively for the Yale Co-op, and it is that collection, recreated under an agreement with Yale University’s Office of Marketing and Trademark Licensing, that will now be introduced globally.

GANT is taking its Ivy League heritage global with the international launch of its GANT Yale Co-op shirt collection. The line, based on original designs carried by the Yale Co-op campus book store during the late 1960s, will be available starting March 26, 2012, at GANT stores and key retail partners worldwide including Germany, Sweden, Italy, the United Kingdom, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, France and Japan. The Yale Shirt Collection will also be sold online at Gant.com.
